Whitedale started well in this match and were soon a goal up after Duncan Anderson drove a low ball into the six yard box from the right wing. It passed keeper Derek Duncan and Richard Sinclair edged it home from close in. Unst mounted wave upon wave of attacks after that but could not put the ball in the net. Erik Thomson was twice through on goal but Whitedale's keeper Martin Young kept him at bay.

Neil Laurenson had a couple of shots that went close after good work on the left wing. Alan Johnson had a good chance to put Whitedale further ahead when he cut in off the right wing but his shot pinged off the far post and was hastily cleared by a relieved defence. Half time came with the visitors still 1-0 up.

In the second half, both teams made good chances but Unst broke through in unlikely circumstances. A low near-post corner from Erik Thomson was flicked over his shoulder by Iain Johnson and past the despairing defence.

Unst kept attacking and when Erik Thomson closed in on goal he clashed with Martin Young, the Whitedale keeper. The keeper limped back into position and watched as his team pushed forward and once again took the lead: a cross into the box fell to Kevin Nicolson to nod neatly into the net. Unst came back yet again and Matthew Mouat hit a speculative looping shot over  Young and into the back of the net. That was the final straw for the keeper; George Ritchie came on to the left midfield with Donald Willmore taking over in goal.

Both teams continued to press but a draw was probably a fair result, especially with Whitedale missing their first choice keeper. Robbie Goudie blew his whistle on a hard but fair match, with Neil Laurenson and Iain Johnson picking up bookings for Unst.
